Age Concern Barnet offers a range of day services to the older residents of the London Borough of Barnet from its two centres - the Ann Owens Centre in East Finchley and the Meritage Centre in Hendon.  These services include:

• Help completing benefit application forms
• General advice on matters concerning older people

Day centres
Age Concern Barnet runs two day centres for older people within the London Borough of Barnet.  These are the Ann Owens Centre in East Finchley and the Meritage Centre in Hendon.  We provide door to door transport for as many of our clients as possible. Dial-a-Ride also brings clients into our centres, if they are registered with the service.  The centres are places where you can go to make new friends, or meet up with old ones.  Each centre has an extensive programme of activities and services on offer.  Please see the following.

Computer suites
Need to use a computer?  Want to learn how?  Age Concern Barnet has computer suites with new and up-to-date computers in both centres.  These are free for all people over the age of 55.  Someone is on hand to help you use them and answer any questions. 

Age Concern Barnet offers computer classes at beginner and advanced levels at both the Ann Owens Centre and the Meritage Centre. Classes are small and the six week courses cost just £20. Hairdressing
Want to update your look?  Need a trim?  Or just want to look amazing? Hairdressing is available at the Ann Owens and Meritage Centres at very reasonable prices. Have your hair done at the Ann Owens Centre on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays.  The hairdresser is available at the Meritage Centre every Thursday and Friday. Nail cutting service
The Ann Owens and Meritage Centres both offer a nail cutting service for a charge of £5.  This service is available to all London Borough of Barnet residents over the age of 55.  Toe and fingernails can be cut and a simple foot and/or hand massage offered.  For more information and to book an appointment, contact Cecilia at the Ann Owens Centre on 020 8432 1423 or 1424, or Carole at the Meritage Centre on 020 8150 0965.

Meet the Safer Neighbourhood Team
Age Concern Barnet’s Meritage Centre in Hendon will be host to surgeries run by the local community police’s Safer Neighbourhood Team from February 2009.  A fabulous new initiative, the surgeries will offer advice on issues such as safety at home, travelling safely and how to report crime.  The Safer Neighbourhood Team will be at the Meritage Centre to speak to you in person about your concerns and there are plenty of leaflets for you to take away.  For more information contact Carole McCarthy at the Meritage Centre on 020 8150 0965.

Shopping bus
Age Concern Barnet operates a shopping bus service every Friday from the Ann Owens Centre.  This service is designed to help those who are still able to shop with minimal help but unable to carry heavy shopping and want the security of safe, reliable door to door transport. This is a pre-booked door to door service, to a variety of local shops with someone available to help carry your shopping from the shop to your kitchen.  This service is available at a cost of £5 per person, per trip.  To book your place, contact the the Ann Owens Centre on 020 8432 1416.

To become a client at our day centres you can be referred by social services or you can refer yourself.  Potential clients must be over 60.  Unfortunately, we are unable to provide constant one-to-one care, but should clients require this, they are welcome to bring their carers.  To find out more about our day centres or to enquire about attending, email us, drop in, or call us at the the Ann Owens Centre in East Finchley on 020 8432 1423 or 1424, or the Meritage Centre in Hendon on 020 8150 0965.
