Age Concern Barnet’s Ageing Well project promotes healthier lifestyles amongst the over 50's. It has established a successful, borough wide falls prevention programme and includes a sophisticated programme of advice on topics such as healthy eating, regular eye checks, managing medicines, foot care, hazards in the home and keeping active.
The falls prevention programme runs in day centres, luncheon clubs and other community settings to reach the widest possible audience. In the UK an older person dies as a result of an accidental fall at home every 5 hours, a tragic statistic, but one that highlights the importance of this programme.
Tai Chi is a central element of the falls prevention programme. Medical evidence has shown that Tai Chi exercise is good for balance and muscle strengthening, which in turn helps to prevent falls. Ageing Well has established many classes throughout Barnet. Click here to find your nearest class.
Ageing Well also trains volunteers to become Tai Chi class leaders and senior health mentors to deliver health promotion talks and provide related advice. Please refer to this link to find out more.
