Age Concern Barnet runs many fitness activities throughout the London Borough of Barnet. These include the instructor-led walks in many of the borough's green spaces and Barnet's community fitness project for over 55s - Say Go!
Line dancing, tango, Tai Chi, exercise to music and yoga are just some of the Say Go! classes currently on offer. Running since September 2008, this is a fun and affordable programme of activities. Public classes will cost £1.50 per person per class per person from January 2010.
It’s a great opportunity, not just to keep fit, but to try something new and add to your social calendar. Consultation with Barnet residents and community groups has been essential in developing this expanding programme.
Just 30% of 50-64 year olds in the UK take enough physical activity. And people take less as they get older – only 6% of 65-84 year olds in England get enough exercise. The health benefits of even just moderate exercise to older people are many, helping maintain a good quality of life.
"Say Go!" is also taking exercise programmes out to Barnet’s residential care homes for the elderly, sheltered housing complexes and day centres. It really is an inclusive programme, reaching out to as many of Barnet’s over 55's as possible.
