Incorrect tax codes for pensioners

Age Concern and Help the Aged are concerned that pensioners may receive incorrect tax codes over the next few weeks‚ as HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) is introducing a new computer system to manage employees' and pensioners' records. This could lead to pensioners overpaying tax from April when these codes will be applied.

Age Concern and Help the Aged have been working in partnership with the Low Incomes Tax Reform Group and‚ together‚ we are pressing HMRC to take appropriate action to recognise the inadequacies and faults of their new computer system.

No reason to worry

Pensioners should not be worried as the problems have been identified‚ but every pensioner should check their coding notice and if they are uncertain as to whether it is correct then they should contact HMRC or‚ if they are on a low income‚ TaxHelp for Older People.

We are looking for HM Revenue & Customs to make corrections to their new computer system‚ so that no pensioner will overpay tax in 2010/11. The problems and actions that pensioners should take are outlined by the Low Incomes Tax Reform Group.
