Gas Safe Register has replaced CORGI in Great Britain and the Isle of Man. The register exists to protect you‚ your family‚ and your property from dangerous gas work.
By law‚ anyone carrying out work on gas installations and appliances in your home must be on the Gas Safe Register.
Be gas safe – always use a Gas Safe registered engineer - and always ask to see their Gas Safe Register ID card.
Ensure you're not at risk
Now winter is here‚ keeping warm is a priority for everyone. Central heating is at the heart of the home and not only can it be miserable if it doesn’t work properly‚ but it could be dangerous too.
Poorly maintained‚ badly installed or faulty gas appliances bring the risk of gas leaks‚ fire‚ explosion and carbon monoxide poisoning.
Carbon monoxide is a highly poisonous gas. You can’t see‚ taste or smell it‚ but it can kill quickly with no warning. The more frail a person is‚ the more quickly the body is overcome by carbon monoxide‚ so some of the people most at risk are older people and the infirm.
Be aware of the symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning and make sure the older people in your community are too. Medical attention should be sought immediately if suffering from any of the following symptoms:
• Headaches
• Dizziness
• Nausea
• Breathlessness
• Collapse
• Loss of consciousness
Other signs carbon monoxide could be present in a property include:
• A lazy yellow flame instead of a blue flame on a gas appliance
• Soot or staining around or on gas appliances
• Pilot lights that frequently blow out
Protect yourself
Protect yourself and vulnerable people in your community from the dangers of carbon monoxide poisoning. Remind everyone to use a Gas Safe registered engineer to install‚ repair and service all gas appliances.
Always ask for the engineer’s Gas Safe Register ID card and check on the back of the card that they are qualified for the type of work they are about to carry out. As a second line of defence install an audible carbon monoxide alarm in the home.
Anyone who has had gas work completed in the last six months and would like to nominate their property for a free gas safety inspection should visit the Gas Safe Register website or contact Gas Safe Register on 0800 408 5500.
